Grammatical Exponents and Picture-likeness in Persian

Abstract

Auxiliaries are among the important grammatical elements which may act as exponents, if realized as free functional units. These verbs are created through grammaticalization – a process in which lexical items become grammatical by losing their semantic components. This article focuses on the auxialiarization of the verb “go”, based on some concepts of Brend Heine such as “grammaticalization chain of verbs” and “chain event schema”. The findings show that these concepts are not efficient enough in a comprehensive study of auxiliarization of the verb “go” because in realization of this process, “linear picture-likeness” plays a crucial role.
