Abstract

Abdolghāher Jorjāni, the famous Iranian rhetorician and grammarian of 5th century (A.H.), is considered as an evolutionary thinker in linguistics due to ideas introduced in Asrār-ol balāqe, and dalā’el-ol e’jāz. In our time a new attempt has been made to show some affinities between his ideas and ideas of modern linguistics. The present article tries to show the so-called “Theory of Order” by Jorjāni has some equivalents in pragmatics and Halliday’s functionalism. The role of speaker and hearer, the relation between syntax and semantics, and the effect of word order on meaning production are among the elements which create this co-relation
