Abstract

Ambiguity is one of the significant rhetorical devices in Persian poetry. It was introduced in the 5th century (A.H.), extended in 6th century and turned out to be a basic device in 7th and 8th centuries poetry, along with other devices like decorum and syllepsis. Any review of Hāfiz poems proves how important this technique is in his work. This article is an attempt to search for evidence of this device in couples like shām/ shafākhāne, moqabbal/some’e, … which reveal another aspect in esthetics of Hāfiz.
